How I used AI to grow our website traffic by 50%

How I used AI to grow our website traffic by 50%
Our website has been live on WordPress for over a decade. It did a job, but it was showing its age. Over the last month I’ve rebuilt and tidied it with Claude (an AI assistant), and the results have honestly surprised me.

In 30 days:

  • Monthly clicks from Google went from 10,000 to 15,000
  • Our average ranking position went from 8 to 4

On top of that, the site looks miles better. It’s more modern and easier to use, and we’re seeing more people fill in quote forms and hit the call button. Which is the whole point.

The one rule I set

Whatever AI built, a human had to be able to edit it. I didn’t want to end up staring at a wall of code if AI vanished tomorrow. So everything stayed in WordPress, built with the normal page builder, and I can still go in and change any page myself.

How I actually did it

Start with a question. I asked Claude something like “Can you help me get our website to do X?”

ChatGPT and the others will do a similar job, I just happen to use Claude.

Set the rule early. “Build it in WordPress, and it must be editable by a human.” Say it at the start and keep saying it.

Install the browser extension. This is the game changer. Claude connects to my browser, so when I ask for something in the chat, I watch it happen live on screen. It clicks, edits and builds while I sit there with a brew.

Let it find the gaps. I used the same extension to go through Google Search Console and Google Analytics with it. It found the pitfalls and weak spots on the site that I’d never have spotted.

Work through them together. Then it was just back and forth, fixing one thing at a time. All in, about 40 hours over the month.

Take backups first. Before any big change, back the site up. Common sense, but worth saying.

The bonus bit

We now have proper tracking set up for things I’d previously have paid a small fortune for someone to implement. That’s all sorted too.

Should you do it?

If working with a developer feels safer, do that. There’s nothing wrong with it. My point is that you don’t have to any more. With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can get really good results yourself.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

PS. Yes, I wrote this with AI too, because I can’t write for toffee and I can’t code either. I totally get the purists, but when you’re juggling a million and one things as a business owner, husband and dad to a toddler, you have to pick your battles.
