Why the Most Regulated Person in the Room Wins

Why the Most Regulated Person in the Room Wins
Let me ask you something.

Think about the best leader you’ve ever worked with. Or worked for. Or been in a room with and thought shit, I want to be like that.

Were they the loudest? The most aggressive? The one who bulldozed through every obstacle like it personally owed them money?

Probably not.

I’d put good money on this: they were calm. Not detached. Not emotionless. Not checked out. But genuinely, solidly regulated.

And here’s the thing. That’s not a personality type. It’s not a gift some people are born with and others aren’t.

It’s a nervous system skill.

Oh great, I hear you say. Another wellness person telling me to breathe through my quarterly targets.

Stay with me. This is actually useful. Promise.

Your nervous system is running your business.

Not your strategy deck. Not your five-year vision. Your nervous system. The ancient, pre-verbal part of your brain that’s been scanning the room for threats since before humans invented spreadsheets.

It decides how you handle the tricky conversation with a team member you’ve been avoiding for three weeks. How you respond when a deal collapses at the last minute. Whether you freeze in front of an investor or fly.

Neuroscientist Dr Stephen Porges gave us Polyvagal theory, which basically tells us this: when your nervous system feels safe, you think clearly. You’re creative, collaborative, and capable of taking smart, calculated risks.

When it doesn’t? You fight, flee, or shut completely down.

You snap at people who don’t deserve it. You send the huffy email. You over-explain in a voice message that somehow runs to four minutes. You avoid the call you’ve needed to make for a month.

Familiar?

Yeah. Me too.

Regulated doesn’t mean perfect.

Full disclosure: I have sent the reactive email. I’ve said yes to things I absolutely meant no to. I’ve made business decisions from a place of panic and spent months quietly unpicking the mess.

Cos’ that’s what happens when you’re dysregulated and you don’t know it.

The difference between a regulated leader and an unregulated one isn’t that the regulated one doesn’t get rattled. It’s that they notice. They pause. They don’t let their threat response make the call on their behalf.

That pause? Worth more than any certification you’ll ever buy.

So what does regulation actually look like in business?

It’s not a yoga mat. It’s not green juice or a gratitude journal or a 5am cold plunge. (Although, look, live your best life.)

It looks like noticing you’re about to send a reactive message and waiting an hour.

It looks like reading the room and realising your team isn’t resistant, they’re scared. Because you’re scared and you haven’t said so.

It looks like sitting with uncertainty without immediately defaulting to control.

Hard? Yes. Learnable? Absolutely. #facts

You are the problem. You are the solution.

This is my core premise and it applies here beautifully. If your nervous system is running your business, then getting regulated isn’t a luxury. It’s the highest-leverage investment you can make in your leadership.

No new strategy will fix a dysregulated leader. Your BSD (Bull Shit Detector, or your Belief System, take your pick) already knows this. Deep down, you know it too.

The 80/20 rule applies here in the best way: 20% of your daily choices to regulate your nervous system will improve 80% of your leadership. Your presence. Your decisions. Your relationships with the people who work with you and for you.

That’s the work. And it’s completely doable.

One last thing.

I’m writing this from the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia, 🇦🇺 as one of a few founding members bringing EPC to this country. And I’ll tell you what I’ve noticed in this small but very mighty community already: the people turning up here are the ones doing the work. On their businesses, yes. On their strategies and their goals and their networks, absolutely.

But more importantly? On themselves.

That’s the kind of business community worth being part of.

Strap yourself in. We’re just getting started.
